Learning how to spot pool equipment issues gives homeowners a chance to address small changes before they become a lost weekend, a costly repair, or an uncomfortable surprise before guests arrive. Start With What You Can See and Hear

The equipment pad is not usually the most elegant part of a backyard, but a brief visual check can reveal a great deal. When the pump is running, look for steady water movement through the pool returns, a full pump basket, and dry ground around the equipment. A properly operating system should sound consistent and controlled, not strained or erratic.

A quiet hum is normal. Grinding, screeching, rattling, or a loud, uneven whine is not. These sounds can point to a worn motor bearing, a failing capacitor, loose hardware, or debris affecting the pump. Do not remove electrical covers or attempt motor repairs yourself. Watch for Changes in Water Circulation

Air bubbles flowing from the return jets are especially worth watching. A few bubbles immediately after cleaning the pump basket can be normal. Persistent bubbles, however, often mean air is entering the system before the pump. Common causes include a loose pump lid, a worn lid O-ring, a low pool water level, or a problem at a suction-line fitting. Left unresolved, air in the system can make the pump work less efficiently and accelerate wear.

A Pump Basket That Will Not Stay Full

When the pump is operating normally, its clear lid should show a basket mostly filled with water. A small air pocket is common, but a basket that repeatedly loses prime, looks half empty, or fills with swirling air suggests a circulation concern. Check that the pool water level sits around the middle of the skimmer opening and that the pump lid is secure.

If the problem continues, avoid repeatedly restarting the pump in hopes that it will correct itself. Running a pump without sufficient water flow can damage seals and internal parts. This is a situation where prompt service is the more careful choice.

Understand Your Filter Pressure Reading

The filter pressure gauge is one of the clearest indicators of how hard your circulation system is working. There is no single ideal pressure for every pool. What matters is your equipment's normal clean operating pressure. A technician can establish that baseline after the filter has been properly cleaned or serviced.

When pressure rises significantly above normal, the filter may be collecting more debris than it can effectively handle. This is common after storms, pollen season, heavy bather use, or algae treatment. A dirty filter restricts flow, which can make the pump work harder and leave chemicals less evenly distributed.

Low pressure can be just as meaningful. It may point to a clogged pump basket, blocked skimmer line, suction leak, or a pump that is struggling to pull water. Because high and low pressure have different causes, avoid treating the gauge as a stand-alone diagnosis. Pair the reading with what you see in the water and hear at the equipment pad.

For cartridge filters, cleaning intervals depend on pool use, landscaping, and storm debris. Over-cleaning can be unnecessarily hard on cartridges, while waiting too long reduces circulation. A professional maintenance schedule helps keep this balance precise rather than reactive.

Notice When the Water Quality Changes Too Quickly

Equipment trouble often first appears as a water-care problem. If your pool is suddenly cloudier, develops algae despite normal chemical treatment, or has difficulty holding chlorine, circulation may be part of the reason. Chemicals need moving water to distribute properly. A pump that is underperforming or a filter that is overdue for service can make even carefully balanced water harder to maintain.

Pay attention to recurring debris as well. If the pool seems to become dirty soon after cleaning, the issue may not be the cleaning itself. Weak skimming, poor return flow, or an ineffective filter can allow fine particles to stay suspended or settle back onto the floor.

Know When a Small Issue Can Wait and When It Cannot

Not every observation calls for an emergency visit. A full skimmer basket after a windy day, a slightly elevated filter pressure after a storm, or brief air bubbles following routine basket cleaning may be resolved through normal maintenance.

Other signs should move higher on the priority list: active leaks, a pump that will not prime, a breaker that trips, a burning smell, loud mechanical noise, significant loss of water flow, or water that turns cloudy rapidly. These conditions can affect safety, cause equipment damage, or make the pool unpleasant to use.

Taking a photo of the pressure gauge, a leak, an error code, or the pump basket can make service communication more efficient. It also creates a helpful record if the issue appears intermittently.
