Why Pool Filter Care Deserves Attention
A pool filter captures the debris that skimming cannot reach: fine dirt, dead algae, pollen, body oils, and other suspended particles. As that material builds up, water has less room to pass through. The pressure inside the system rises, flow at the returns may soften, and the pump has to work against greater resistance.
For Dallas-Fort Worth homeowners, this is often seasonal rather than constant. Oak pollen, windy days, construction dust, heavy rain, and frequent pool use can each accelerate filter loading. A quiet week with the pool covered may require very little attention. A holiday weekend followed by a storm may require a prompt inspection.

Know Which Filter Your Pool Uses
The right cleaning method depends on the filter type. Most residential pools use cartridge, sand, or diatomaceous earth, often called DE, filtration. Each has different maintenance needs, and treating them the same can reduce performance or damage components.
Cartridge filters
Cartridge filters use pleated elements to catch fine debris. They are common in residential pools because they filter well without a backwash line and are relatively straightforward to service. When pressure rises above the clean baseline, the cartridges are removed and rinsed carefully from top to bottom, with attention to the folds where debris collects.
A gentle hose rinse is usually appropriate for routine care. High-pressure spray can flatten or tear the pleats, shortening cartridge life. Oils, calcium scale, and stubborn embedded debris may require a more thorough professional cleaning. The order matters: cartridges should be degreased before any acid treatment, and acid should never be a casual first step.
Sand filters
Sand filters push water through a bed of specially graded sand. Routine cleaning is done by backwashing, which reverses the water flow and sends trapped debris out through the waste line. Backwashing for too long wastes water and can disturb the filter bed, so it should be guided by pressure and water clarity rather than habit.
The sand itself does not need frequent replacement. Depending on water conditions and use, it may last several years. If backwashing no longer restores flow or the filter is allowing visible debris back into the pool, the media and internal components deserve inspection.
DE filters
DE filters provide very fine filtration, but they require careful handling. After backwashing or opening the filter, the system needs the correct amount of fresh DE added according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Too little reduces filtration quality; too much can restrict flow or create operational problems.
Because DE powder is a fine material and the grids inside the tank are more involved than a typical cartridge setup, many homeowners prefer certified service for deep cleaning and reassembly. This is a sensible trade-off when protecting equipment and avoiding messy, uncertain maintenance.
Use Pressure, Not Guesswork, to Set the Schedule
The pressure gauge is one of the most useful indicators on your equipment pad. After a professional cleaning or a properly completed homeowner service, note the normal operating pressure while the pump is running at its usual speed. This is your clean baseline.
Most filters need attention when the reading rises about 20 to 25 percent above that baseline. For example, a system that normally runs at 16 psi may be ready for cleaning around 19 to 20 psi. The exact threshold depends on the equipment, pump speed, plumbing layout, and manufacturer guidance, so the number itself matters less than the change from normal.
Do not wait for the gauge alone if you notice poor return flow, a cloudy appearance, frequent vacuum debris, or a pump that sounds strained. Likewise, do not clean a filter simply because a calendar says it is time if pressure and circulation remain normal. Cleaning too often can be counterproductive, particularly with sand filters, which may filter slightly better once a light layer of captured material has developed.
A weekly visual check is usually enough for a well-maintained pool. It takes less than a minute to look at the gauge, confirm water movement at the returns, and check that the equipment pad is dry and orderly. This small habit makes it easier to spot a meaningful change before it affects the swimming experience.
Protect the Filter Between Cleanings
The filter should handle fine particles, not every leaf and piece of debris that enters the water. Routine skimming, emptying the skimmer and pump baskets, and brushing walls and steps all reduce the burden placed on filtration. Vacuuming also matters because settled debris becomes harder to manage once it breaks apart.
Balanced water protects the filter as well. High calcium can leave scale on cartridges, grids, and internal surfaces. Improper sanitizer levels can allow algae to grow, which quickly clogs filter media. Excessive oils from lotions, cosmetics, or heavy bather use can coat cartridges and reduce their ability to pass water.
After a major storm, check baskets and circulation promptly. Rain can introduce dirt and dilute chemicals, while wind can pack the skimmer with leaves before they ever reach the filter. If the pool has been used heavily for an event, a quick equipment assessment afterward is more valuable than waiting for the next scheduled cleaning.
Avoid the Most Expensive Filter-Care Mistakes
The first mistake is opening equipment while the pump is running or while pressure remains in the tank. Always turn off the pump at the breaker or timer, relieve pressure through the air-relief valve when applicable, and follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. A pressurized filter tank is not a place for shortcuts.
The second is reinstalling components without checking seals, clamps, and O-rings. A pinched or dry O-ring can create an air leak, allowing the pump to lose prime or run inefficiently. Clean sealing surfaces and use the manufacturer-approved lubricant sparingly where required.
The third is treating a recurring pressure problem as a filter issue every time. A dirty filter is common, but pressure and flow changes can also come from a blocked skimmer line, a worn pump basket, a valve position problem, a failing gauge, or an equipment issue. Repeatedly cleaning a filter that is already clean will not solve the underlying cause.
Finally, avoid using harsh chemicals or improvised tools without knowing whether they are compatible with your filter. Damaged cartridge bands, torn DE grids, broken laterals, and brittle tank parts are far more costly than a measured service approach.

Routine checks are well within reach for many homeowners. Deep service is different. Opening a large filter tank, handling DE, inspecting internal manifolds, removing scale, identifying worn cartridges, and resetting the system correctly take time and experience.
